Truth Quote of the Week

This is another quote without the word "truth," but it is a true quote.

"When thy prayers seek God's glory, it is God's glory to answer thy prayers."

C. H. Spurgeon - sermon # 3484

Give Attention to the Truth

I'm teaching through Daniel in our weekly Bible hour at church. It is interesting to see the difference in perspective on truth between the righteous and the unrighteous. What we see in our day is no different than what we find in Daniel.

The ungodly have no regard for truth, in fact they say there is no absolute truth. This of course is what they choose to believe, because to believe that there is absolute truth is to admit there is a standard by which we must live. And it is clear to anyone who can add 2+2=4, that the statement "there is no absolute truth" is in fact an absolute statement. Nevertheless the ungodly are not bothered by such folly.

In Daniel 8 the little horn, better known as Antiochus Epiphanies, is prophesied to be one who will "fling truth to the ground" (8:12). He is shown to be one who has no regard for truth, and in fact he didn't. He burned the Scriptures and sought to kill anyone who possessed copies of the Scriptures. He hated the truth. He desecrated the temple in Jerusalem, built an idol of Zeus in the temple area, and offered swine upon the altar to his pagan deities.

Do we not see similar treatment of that which is true and sacred in our time? Bibles are not being burned in our country yet, but the truths of the Bible are certainly under attack. Marriage, a very sacred and God-ordained institution is under fierce attack in our day. A Miss America contestant is ostricized, because she doesn't accept homosexual marriage. Faith groups are said to be increasingly losing "gay rights" fights in the courts. And pagans like Tony Blair are now saying their spiritual leaders (his being the Pope) are wrong about homosexuality.

Is truth not being flung to the ground in our day? Truth is being abandoned for the sake of tolerance and diversity. Even the name of Jesus is something that is not to be spoken of in our day. Jesus, the precious name of Jesus, was recently covered by the President of the United States before he stood to give a policy speech in our nation's capital.

Such abominations run rampant in our day yet many seem to overlook them as isolated events. The wicked may treat the truth with such contempt, but the righteous are to be different! In the very next chapter of Daniel (ch. 9) he prays,

"As it is written in the law of Moses, all this calamity has come on us; yet we have not sought the favor of the LORD our God by turning from our iniquity and giving attention to Your truth. Therefore the LORD has kept the calamity in store and brought it on us; for the LORD our God is righteous with respect to all His deeds which He has done, but we have not obeyed His voice" (9:13-14).

Daniel here was of course speaking of the 70 years of Babylonian Captivity. Israel even in captivity did not repent and give attention to the truth, therefore they experienced God's judgment and calamity.

May we not expect calamity as well? How do we today view truth? We are not to give up in the battle for truth. The abominations taking place today are opening the hand of God that is filled with fury, judgment, and ultimately calamity for those who reject His truth. He who does not give attention to the truth will be overtaken by calamity.

How Can God Bless America?

Drudge Report links a couple articles where the White House specifically requested Georgetown University to cover the name of Jesus where Obama would give a policy speech. Oh how far we have gone from the days of Washington and Lincoln.

Jesus said, "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels." - Mark 8:38

We have before us today a visible picture of what took place in Scripture when kings led their people away from God and into destruction. In Obama's message before the covered name of Jesus he had the audacity to quote from the sermon on the amount. How hypocritical!

Forget saying "God bless America." The Apostle Paul said it better, "If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be Anathema Maranatha." - 1 Corinthians 16:22

He Has Risen!

"He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying."

The Day the Priests Were Put Out of Business

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" 35 And when some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, "Behold, He is calling for Elijah." 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down." 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last. 38 And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" - Mark 15:34-39

The veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. That was it. The service of the priests was over. Their services are no longer needed. Jesus Himself is our great High Priest. Because of His death and resurrection we now come straight to Him in prayer no longer needing a priest to stand between us and God. What an amazing truth! Praise the Lord!

U.S. a Secular State?

Last night we were watching CNN and they ran a quote across the screen that President Obama apparently made yesterday. He said, "The U.S. is not a country of Christians, Muslims, or Jews. We are a country of Citizens."

I guess he forgot how our country was founded. Maybe he hasn't looked at some of the buildings across town where God's name is written and where He is acknowledged as the Almighty. Maybe he even forgot why we as a country celebrate Thanksgiving. America was once a great country where speaking of God (the God of the Bible) and Christ was commonplace. Today it is virtually forbidden in governmental buildings and discussions. I fear what the country will be like when Obama leaves office. Not that I fear the future, but fear the consequences of such iniquity.

His obvious goal is for America to be a secular state, to become another Europe. A Europe where God's name is intentionally left out of all government constitutions, documents, and discussion. A Europe where everything is tolerated except truth itself.

May we take this time to pray for our President. To pray for his salvation, his decision-making, and his leadership.

100,000 Apostates Seek De-Baptism

There are more than 100,000 Britons who have downloaded "certificates of de-baptism" according to the AP. The article calls them "atheists," but would they not be described more accurately as "apostates?"

Will not their judgment be greater according to the Scriptures? Are they not described spiritually as unreasoning animals (Jude 10)? "Woe to them!" saith the Scriptures. They are "grumblers, finding fault, following after their own lusts; they speak arrogantly, flattering people for the sake of gaining an advantage" (Jude 16). Those aren't my words, those are the words of the Bible, and their punishment will be severe.

This "movement" is being led by the National Secular Society (NSS). It is the same group that promoted the "There's probably no God" bus advertisements in London. Their goal is to preach another gospel that says, "live however you want." It is a damning gospel.

It is hard to believe that Britain has gone from the days of the English reformers of Latimer, Hooper, Ridley, and others to what it is today. This is what happens when the Word isn't preached.

May a great awakening come to Britain once again led by a movement of men who preach the Truth!
