Truth Quote of the Week

"There is a great defect in the manner of many preachers. It can scarcely be said that the Gospel is preached by them. Their sermons are very confused; they contain many expressions which are not taught by the Holy Ghost; and subjects are so clothed with new words, that it is difficult to know what is meant. Though these preachers may not be accused of saying what is false, yet, alas, they neglect stating weighty and necessary truths when opportunities offer. By omitting those important portions of truth in their natural connection, the Word is made subservient to subjects never intended. The hearers are led to deny the truth which the preacher leaves out of his sermons. Omitting any truth intentionally in a sermon leads to the denial of it."

- John Elias, as quoted in Preachers Who Made a Difference by Peter Jeffery

Go Vaclav Klaus!

BRUSSELS – The European Union has turned into an undemocratic and elitist project comparable to the Communist dictatorships of eastern Europe that forbade alternative thinking, Czech President Vaclav Klaus told the European Parliament on Thursday.

Enough said.

He criticized this socialist bloc of countries as not being willing to tolerate any opposition, which is precisely what he said the USSR did during communism. Do we not also see this in the church today when preachers seek to take a stand for the truth?

Quote for the Week

This quote doesn't use the word "truth" as most quotes here do, but it relates to the truth (i.e., the Word of God). It is a quote about preaching.

"Do not choose a man who always preaches on isolated texts, I care not how powerful and eloquent he may be. The effect of his eloquence will be to banish a taste of the Word of God and substitute a taste for the preacher in its place."

- as quoted in Protestant Biblical Interpretation by Bernard Ramm, 97.

Don't Mess with Czech

You have heard "don't mess with Texas." Well, I would say "don't mess with Czech." The Czech Republic is being criticized for a law whereby they castrate sex offenders! Wow! I had no idea that such a law existed, but way to go Czech Republic! If that doesn't deter you from committing a crime what will!

My blogging has slowed to almost a halt. Things have been real busy after returning from my Old Testament preaching class. The whole family was wiped out with the stomach flu except for me and my youngest daughter, who were fortunate enough to have escaped its wrath. But that meant that I served as husband, dad, doctor, and cook during that time.

Hopefully things will slow a little, but I don't anticipate it. Facebook has taken some of my blog time, so I"ll try to keep a balance.
